Executive Volunteers Bring Professional Moxie to Nonprofits

Back in 2006, when she was 52 years old, financial services executive Paula Meyer read a book that changed her life — and launched her into founding a nonprofits organization that is changing the world, one child at a time. The book, Just Enough by Harvard University professors Laura Nash and Howard Stevenson posits that the most balanced people among successful “high achievers” integrate four aspects of their lives: happiness, achievement, significance, and legacy.
Meyer was happy and had achieved much in her career; her family and volunteer work added significance to her life. But the legacy, “leaving something that endures after you are gone,” was not yet part of her personal and professional portfolio.

2015 Winter Letter from Paula

Paula
As I write this note, I am just about to leave for my 14th trip to Kenya since 2007 when our program launched.  While in Kenya, I will have many meetings with members of our team to discuss how the organization performed in 2014 and to agree on priorities for 2015.   I will meet with local funders and supporters and try to cultivate a few new relationships.  And on February 14th I will attend Peter Ndungu’s wedding to Phidilia Mwachala – my first African wedding.

Our KCPE Scores Are High!

Each year, students finishing 8th grade in Kenya take the Kenya Comprehensive Primary Exam (KCPE), a nationwide exam graded on a 500-point scale.

Largest class ever

In 2014, our program had 51 students finish 8th grade and complete the KCPE.  This is our largest class ever.

The average score is 295

The average score earned by Ngong Road Children’s Foundation students was 295 out of 500 compared to the average score earned nationwide of 251.

Post-Secondary Program Finalized

In 2014, our program had 37 students finish high school.  They all took Kenya Comprehensive Secondary Exams (KCSE) during the month of November and will get their marks in March 2015.  In the meantime, all of them have elected to join our program’s post-secondary program.
