Our new Programme Director – Maureen Mulievi

Born and brought up in Western Kenya, Kakamega County. Maureen is a social scientist by profession having completed her Master of Arts in Sociology and bachelor’s degree in Social Science (Sociology option) from Moi University. When she was growing up, she dreamed of being a street actor. Maureen now says “Thankfully, my career goals became more aspirational over the years, but I love being strategic and wooing masses – a passion that makes me a successful Social Manager”.

Looking back over the last 10 years, Maureen observes “I have built my career on one simple principle: Working smart. I am the kind of person who puts a stop to inefficient procedures, I find ways to streamline them and consistently strive to boost the productivity of everyone around me. This is what has been allowing me to move up the ladder since I started my career and it is what I am doing as the Programme Director of Ngong Road Children’s Foundation (NRCF). I try to regularly associate with passionate people who help me push myself, I try to get inspiration from within and get motivated when I can solve challenging assignments.”

Further, Maureen explains, “I believe as the Program Director of NRCF, I can lead the organization to greater heights. Being passionate about orphans and vulnerable children I want to be their leader and inspiration. By showing them the love they need they will always appreciate NRCF as their best home while I and my team strive to transform their lives physically, emotionally, cognitively, and socially.

Two Years in Nairobi

Luther Alumni Magazine featured our very own Michael and Leah Switzer! Read more about their two years in Kenya where Michael helped start Karibu Loo, the portable sanitation company that supports the charitable mission to help educate kids. “The board of Friends of Ngong Road believes that with the addition of earned income in Nairobi, Kenya through Karibu Loo, our mission of educating some of the world’s poorest children will become much more sustainable.”

Annual Gathering 2016

Thank you to those who joined us at the 2016 Annual Gathering held on October 24 at the Pourhouse in Minneapolis. Paula Meyer and the Ngong Road Children’s Foundation Board Chair from Kenya, Rajpreet Bains, provided program updates and shared stories of what our kids “can do.” Elisha can become a civil engineer. Michael can lead others. Winnie can read. Mary can transform her life. We are proud of our kids!

And just as our kids can do so much, we thank and applaud our sponsors, donors, and partners for all you can and have done. Your support has made education possible for nearly 400 children. Your support gives children the chance to say “I Can” both today and in the future.

A special shout out to event volunteers and to the band Six Still Standing for providing entertainment at this year’s event. We hope to see everyone next year!

March 2017 Trip to Kenya!

A few spots are still available for our March 2017 trip! Meet children in the program who are transforming their lives amidst daily hardships. Meet their parents and caseworkers. Visit a school, a home, the computer lab and library. Participate in Saturday program. And of course, go on a few safaris!

Friends of Ngong Road is partnering with fellow Minneapolis based non-profit Wilderness Inquiry to offer this incredible experience. The trip is 10 days – long enough to have a valuable experience, but doable for many working people or students. Trip cost is $3,995 plus airfare.
