Meet Princess: A Young Girl Shaping Her Future

Educating a child has a powerful impact on reducing poverty: Meet Princess, a brilliant nine-year-old in fourth grade. Coming from a modest background, she has transformed her struggles into strength. Thanks to the support of the Ngong Road Children’s Foundation, she has worked hard to excel academically.

In addition to her studies, she serves as an assistant games prefect, demonstrating strong leadership skills. Her enthusiasm for sports motivates her peers to challenge themselves and have fun. She also enjoys drawing as it helps her escape into a world of her imagination. She actively participates in the Saturday Child Development Programme’s art club, where she showcases her creativity and inspires younger children to express themselves through art.

Princess is a determined young girl with aspirations of becoming a doctor one day, motivated by her desire to make a difference in the lives of others. She is grateful to NRCF for giving her the support she needs to reach her dreams. Her story shows how important education and support can be in changing lives. She represents the strength and potential of every child. Investing in education is not just charity; it’s a way to change society for the better. With the right support and opportunities, young leaders like Princess will create a brighter future for their communities and the world.

NRCF Founder And Sponsors Visit Kenya

Our Founder and President, Paula Meyer, recently visited us in Kenya, accompanied by a group of generous sponsors. Their trip focused on engaging with the children we support, observing the impact of our programs in Kenya, and discussing our plans for the exciting future of NRCF.

Paula engaged with our dedicated staff and leadership team to discuss the foundation’s five-year plan to support 1,000 children by the year 2030 and reviewed strategies for sustainable growth. They discussed various strategies to amplify our impact and extend our support to help more children in need.

The sponsors met with current students and alumni who shared their success stories and expressed gratitude for the transformative support of the NRCF and our impact in Kenya. They created lasting memories by sharing lunch and shopping trips with their sponsored students. They also joined our Saturday Child Development  Program where they laughed, played games, and built connections with the children. Additionally, they visited the homes of some beneficiaries to meet their families.

During the trip, Paula and the sponsors got to experience the beauty of Kenya. They visited the Giraffe Center to interact with the gentle giants Elephant Orphanage to see baby elephants and the historic home of Karen Blixen. They also enjoyed thrilling safaris in national parks like Amboseli, Samburu, and Maasai Mara, hoping to see amazing wildlife.

Recent Graduates

    Perpetual

When Perpetual joined the program in 2010, it was like opening a door to a new world. Growing up in the slums of Dagoretti, getting quality education had always seemed like an impossible dream. But Perpetual was a bright and determined student, and she was ready to change her story. From her early days in primary school, she worked tirelessly, showing an unbreakable spirit and incredible hard work. By 2019, her dreams took her to one of the country’s top universities. There, she started a Bachelor of Business Information Technology (BBIT) degree course, a challenging four-year journey that she successfully completed in 2023.

Throughout her university years, Perpetual didn’t just shine in her studies, she also poured her heart into helping others. Every Saturday, she volunteered at the NRCF program, offering guidance and support to younger students who looked up to her. With her passion for photography, she captured and shared the stories of many, hoping to inspire others to support not just one student, but the entire program. Her impressive resume includes a contract position with Lido Nation, one of NRCF’s valued partners, where she worked as a blockchain website translator. Additionally, she was a vital member of the TechMates team, contributing her talents as a developer.  She is actively seeking a tech support position.

Perpetual attributes her clear and promising future to the unwavering support of the program. Her family, particularly her grandmother, are beyond excited as they wait to see Perpetual putting on a graduation gown, something they never thought they would live to witness. “The education and development opportunities provided to her have been life-changing, paving the way for her to achieve her dream of hearing her name being mentioned as a graduate”, her grandmother smilingly said. She is now on the verge of entering the professional world, armed with knowledge, experience, and a deep-seated gratitude for the support that has brought her this far.

Gslaider (G-sly-der)

education-empowerment-stories

In 2009, Gslaider joined our program after years of her parents uncertainty over whether she would ever get the chance to go to school; trapped in a cycle of poverty like so many others. Joining the program was a source of hope not only for Gslaider but for the entire family. Fueled by this hope, Gslaider embarked on her educational journey. After her high school graduation, she pursued a diploma in Social Work and Community Development, driven by a deep desire to help others. She completed her degree last November. It was not just an academic pursuit for her; it was a heartfelt mission to enhance human well-being and make a tangible difference in her community.

Her commitment to social work was evident as she engaged in various volunteer activities during her college years. She joined the Rotary Club of Mount Kenya, where she actively participated in fieldwork and volunteered at children’s homes and rehabilitation centers. She interned with the National Council for Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD), which provided her with invaluable insights and deepened her understanding of the struggles faced by individuals with disabilities.

Currently, she works as a waiter and cashier in a restaurant as she looks for employment in her field. This job is enabling her to support herself and her siblings, something she never thought she would be able to do. Her mom is proud of her, and she is hopeful that her determination and success will serve as an example to other girls in the community, showing them that it is possible to break free from the vicious cycle of poverty. Her journey has been profoundly impacted by our program, allowing her transformation from a hopeless girl into an elite achiever.

Passion for Dance and Art

My name is Mirriam and I’m a 10-year-old girl in the fourth grade. I have two hobbies that I love: dancing and art. I joined the Ngong Road Children’s Foundation in 2023 and I am currently enrolled in the Nelson Mandela Academy, where I am thriving academically and learning many new things.

Passion for Dance and Art

During my free time, I love spending time with my friends in school, where we study, play, and have fun together. My favorite sport is athletics, and I am particularly passionate about running. I always look forward to Saturdays when I can participate in sports activities, learn new art skills, enjoy a delicious meal, and catch up with my friends.

One person who inspires me is Charles Richard Drew, an American surgeon and medical researcher who made significant contributions to blood transfusions. I admire his dedication and contribution to the medical field, particularly how he developed improved blood storage techniques and applied his expert knowledge to develop large-scale blood banks early in World War II.

To improve my academic skills, I use the Elimu Hub. I attend computer classes once a week, which I find thrilling as I am improving my computer skills. I also enjoy reading books from the platform, which have helped me improve my English language skills. I am grateful for the support the program is giving me and I will continue to work hard and make my sponsor proud as well as myself.

Transform a life.

Learning through Play at the Ngong Road Children’s Foundation

financial litrature

This Saturday at the Ngong Road Children’s Foundation was full of fun, games, and learning. The program began with a tasty lunch, followed by an exciting game of kickball. The boys were divided into two teams, with one team kicking the ball and the other trying to catch it before their opponents could run around the small field. This activity encouraged fun, creativity, decision-making, and teamwork among both teams.

The girls displayed their impressive dance moves from their dance club lessons, bringing bright and shining smiles to everyone’s faces. Meanwhile, the art club proudly showcased their passion for creativity through breathtaking sketches that demonstrated each student’s artistic talents.

The financial literacy team engaged in a lively game of Monopoly – a classic board game that is not only enjoyable but also highly educational. Monopoly, derived from The Landlord’s Game created by Lizzie Magie in 1903, teaches economic theories and demonstrates that an economy rewarding individuals is better than one where monopolies hold all the wealth. Monopoly enhances cognitive development, promotes a positive attitude towards money, highlights the importance of goal-setting, fosters resilience, and instructs on risk/reward concepts as well as long and short-term investing strategies.

The football enthusiasts also had a thrilling match between two teams showcasing their skills and creative techniques on the field.

The day wrapped up with candy and snacks as the children mingled and enjoyed some free time together. Your generous contributions enable us to organize such impactful events which transform these young lives. You can continue to be part of our journey by volunteering, donating or sponsoring a child – ensuring our ability to touch even more lives in positive ways.
