During one of the school holidays each year we sponsor a camp for all the children in the program. If you ask any child what is the best thing about being part of Ngong Road Children Association they will say “Camp!” Camp is a chance for the children to get out of their setting and to spend time out of the slums and in a healthy, stimulating environment focused on learning and fun. Camp is divided into four sessions, including:
Leadership camp – for students 15 and older who have been selected to be junior counselors (24 campers). The goal is to explore and discuss characteristics of leadership, using a servant leadership model. Activities strengthen each camper’s leadership abilities and provide training for their job responsibilities once the rest of the campers are present. Camp is held outside of Nairobi.
Seniors camp – for students age 14 and older (approximately 120 campers). The goal is to provide age-appropriate interactive learning on topics such as human sexuality, job skills and how to think about life after secondary school. In addition, each day includes fun activities, games and a community service project. Camp is held outside of Nairobi.
Grammar school camp – for students age 10 – 13 (approximately 160 campers, and includes 30 students from a rural area whom we invite as our guests). The goal is to give students their first experience camping away from home. Held at a scout camp that is about 5K from our office in Nairobi, this camp is game-oriented, including swimming instruction and age appropriate interactive learning.
Little kids camp – for children 9 and younger (approximately 70 campers). This is a one-day field trip to a special location in the Nairobi area and includes games, letter-writing to sponsors, interactive learning and a special meal.
Camp is staffed by our local caseworkers and by volunteers from the U.S. who travel to Kenya to attend as well as Kenyans who volunteer their time to assist. Learn more
