Cayla Hawi is 7 years old,she was born on 21st September 2015.She is in grade 3 at Jagiet academy.She lives with her mother, her two siblings (elder brother and last born sister), and a cousin in satellite. The family lives in a single-room house, made from iron sheets and timber. The house has been subdivided using a piece of cloth into the bedroom, living room, and a kitchen. The room is squeezed and congested. The house is furnished with two old couches, a table, and a bed. Cayla, her sister, and her cousin share the bed while the elder brother sleeps on the couch. The mother spreads the mattress on the floor at night where she sleeps.
The mother uses a kerosene stove to make meals for the family. The house is connected to electricity which they pay via tokens. They purchase water from a water vendor at 10ksh per 20 liters jerrycan. They share a latrine with several other neighbors in the same area. The mother is a single mother, thus the sole breadwinner of the family. She depends on casual jobs in order to provide for the family. She used to have a permanent job before the covid-19 outbreak. She lost her job and has been surviving on casual jobs. She says it’s been hard surviving especially with the size of the family she has. They often have to survive on one meal a day.
The home environment is very noisy because it’s crowded and the plot is squeezed. However, they have to put up with the situation since that’s what they can afford at the moment.Cayla loves studying, she was position four in the last exam. Her favorite subjects are English, environmental studies, and cre. Cayla’s dream is to be a pre-school teacher, interestingly she said she would love to teach mathematics and Kiswahili. Cayla loves soccer and ballet. She loves dancing and she is on the scout team too.
Her mother says she needs support in keeping her in school and that way she is optimistic that her daughter will achieve her dream. She is hopeful that she will get support to keep her daughter in school for a good education.
