Paula’s Impactful Visit to NRCF

Transforming lives

Recently I returned from another trip to visit the Ngong Road Children’s Foundation office in Nairobi with our board member, John Kundtz. Although I have visited the office, staff, and students many times before, this visit felt different. Overall impressions are that this place is well-run. The team is good at identifying and solving problems. I used to come here and leave them with a laundry list of items to fix, solve, and manage. Now, they handle that themselves.

I met with four alumni students and several other graduates from our program. It was so encouraging and uplifting. Some of those alumni gave an unsolicited, full-throated summary of the many ways their lives have been changed by involvement with the program. It was moving.

Many of our alumni can retain jobs to support themselves and their families. One student I met with did not complete his post-secondary education, and last year seemed angry and disaffected. This year he was well-dressed and seems much more satisfied with his life. He works 3 – 4 days per week for an event company, helping set up and take down tents, tables, chairs, flowers, etc. He has his own place and can take care of himself and as he said, “That is all I want”. Someday he may want more, but for now, he is as happy as I’ve seen him.

John and I had dinner with our tech staff members in Kenya – Washingtone, and Victor, as well as Fammy and SallyAnne, current TechMates freelancers, to get an update on the program. We asked lots of questions and left very impressed with the work they are doing. They are appropriately frustrated that TechMates freelancers are not all finding a way to support themselves with gig work, but are pursuing ideas to improve those results.

We spent a day in the office with the staff of both Karibu Loo and Ngong Road Children’s Foundation. Judy, the new Chair of the Karibu Loo board, has helped move it to the next level – that was pretty energizing for me to see.

The Ngong Road Children’s Foundation staff meetings now include a projection of their various Salesforce dashboards so everyone can see who is up-to-date on home/school visits and report to everyone else and plans for the coming week. It is tight and professional.

Transforming lives

We heard from a panel of seven alumni – again, such beautiful stories of lives transformed. Margaret was one of them – she wanted to be a lawyer but didn’t have the grades. She studied Community Development and did an internship in our office but then got a job at a law firm where she made herself indispensable. They supported her efforts to get a certificate in mediation. She was then recruited by a larger law firm in Nairobi and is now the Chief Administrator for that firm which has offices in Nairobi and Kisumu. Her testimony about her journey was so heartfelt and powerful.

Making me extremely happy, Stacy came to participate in this panel. She is (finally, after seven years) going to finish her diploma at her own expense. Meanwhile, she is very successful working for CIO Africa. She is responsible for selling tech firms on being sponsors of their annual conference and has visited seven African countries with them and earned enough to buy herself a little orange Peugeot. I asked her whether they recognized any NGOs and she said “No. NGOs are woefully behind in technology.” We then enlightened her on our Creating Techies path and she invited us to develop a 2-minute video that she will show at the November conference they are holding in Nairobi. Big opportunity!

I visited the U.S. Embassy, which Carole helped facilitate, and then met with Donatus, who will lead our tour in March. I also had dinner with two local board members – Rephah and Patrick.

Help us reach our fundraising goal by Dec. 31st

Your donation is a path to success

Students success

Funding a quality education is at the center of what we do, yet education doesn’t stop at the classroom door. A critical part of our student’s success is the comprehensive support programs and people we uniquely provide all our students. These initiatives equip students with the tools they need to prepare and secure meaningful employment.

  • Every student has a guidance counselor to encourage our students and monitor their ongoing progress.
  • Our students receive healthcare, food support and access to a wide range of wellness programs.
  • Life skills training to equip students with essential self-awareness, social, and career development skills to confidently navigate personal and professional challenges.
  • Employment readiness programs and assistance to support students transition from education to sustainable careers by enhancing their employability.
  • Mentorship to guide and support students in their personal and professional growth.

These initiatives equip students with the tools they need to succeed in school, then prepare and secure meaningful employment.

These supportive programs are funded through individual contributions, above sponsorships.  Every contribution makes a significant difference in helping our students break the cycle of poverty.

Please donate today. We still need to raise $35,000 to reach our $100,000 goal before December 31st. Your donation will help us secure the entire $100,000 match from the Ted and Kathy Truscott Challenge Grant.

High school graduates of 2024

We are thrilled to announce the upcoming high school graduation of 16 bright young minds. 12 remarkable young women and 4 determined young men are set to embark on the next chapter of their lives, armed with the knowledge and support provided by Friends of Ngong Road.

A few stories about these graduates:

Highschool Graduates
  • Rishan, a promising Kolanya Girls High School graduate, strongly desires to become a psychologist, inspired by the growing need for mental health support in today’s society.  ‘I’ve witnessed an increase in the number of individuals struggling with mental health issues.’  Rishan replied when asked about her commitment to providing compassionate care and helping others overcome their challenges.

Highschool graduates
  • Dennis, another bright student graduating from Dagoretti Boys High School, dreams of becoming an architect. He loves designing and building and hopes to shape Kenya’s cities and create innovative spaces that inspire and uplift. His creativity and problem-solving skills make him a promising future architect.

HIghschool Graduates
  • Faith is a bright and outgoing girl who is a promising graduate of Precious Blood Riruta. She aspires to become a lawyer, driven by her passion for justice and her sharp intellect, which make her a strong candidate for a future in legal advocacy. In addition to her academic ambitions, Faith enjoys dancing and playing soccer, both of which reflect her energetic and determined spirit.

As the festive season approaches, these graduates plan to relax, spend quality time with their families, and enjoy well-deserved breaks. Early in the new year, they will enroll in our Computer Training Program, further enhancing their technical skills and preparing them for their post-secondary education.

We remain dedicated to supporting these young individuals as they transition to higher education. The organization will continue to provide guidance, mentorship, and financial assistance to ensure their success.

We extend our heartfelt congratulations to all the graduates and wish them a bright future filled with achievements and happiness.

Give the Gift of Education this Holiday!

Honor someone with a unique gift

Gift of education

We know that shopping and trying to find the right gift is hard. We invite you to give a gift that is meaningful and makes a difference in the life of a child.

With education and support from Friends of Ngong Road, our students have the opportunity to attend school, develop strong life skills, and secure employment. They transform their lives and uplift their family and community. They are often able to leave the slums and, in most cases, help others in their family. Education not only transforms a life but also ends the cycle of poverty for generations.

This holiday season, consider giving the gift of education.

Donate to our annual appeal in honor of someone on your holiday list and we will send them a card acknowledging your gift.

Give the gift of a sponsorship. Transform the life of an individual student through the ongoing support of their school tuition and fees. You provide the funds, and your loved one develops a relationship with a student in Kenya. This is a great gift for a child or grandchild so that they learn what life is like for kids similar in age in Kenya. To gift a sponsorship this holiday season, email naomi@ngongroad.org or call 612-568-4211.
