I have never had the opportunity to visit the “Craft Ladies” but would love to meet them. Somehow this never seems to work during camp. I have great admiration for the level of their craft work having purchased much and given often as gifts. Everyone truly loves their items. I have seen items of this type on sale with groups on e-bay (the one I often visit is Africa Direct), and the prices are much higher than we usually sell our crafts for. We don’t even cover the labor alone (maybe ten hours??? I charge $25.00/hour to keep my pieces more competitive, but that is quite low. Still, 10 hours of labor is $250.00). Artisans are forever trying to help people realize the value of a handcrafted item, and it helps me understand why the beaded animals with Africa Direct are $300.00. Are we selling ours too low? Maybe $300 wouldn’t sell, but I have paid only $40.00 for the big bowls and I thought that was very cheap. ANYWAY, I loved that article and knowing her isolation and how hard it is to sell her crafts really raises my respect for her. Drought in Africa really makes climate change hit home and who pays the price for it. I pray that we all continue to understand it’s impact and work for changes to abate it’s effects.
