When a community invests in a child, the impact extends far beyond a single life. It creates a ripple effect that can transform entire generations. Hillary’s story is a powerful reflection of this truth—a journey that spans over 15 years, moving from a young boy with big dreams to a dedicated leader giving back to the very community that raised him.
Overcoming Hurdles in Ngando
Hillary grew up in Ngando, attending Jagiet Academy, one of Ngong Road’s primary partner schools. Through hard work and focus, he scored well on his national examinations and secured a spot at Dagoretti High School.
High school brought significant challenges, particularly with the disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. However, Hillary’s determination never wavered. He earned strong grades and earned his admission to university, proving that circumstances do not dictate potential.
Discovering a True Calling in Social Work
While Hillary initially planned to become a teacher, his experiences with the organization pointed him toward a different path.
Watching our Case Managers and social workers walk alongside families, offer steady support, and restore hope inspired him deeply. He realized his true calling was social work—a path where he could dedicate his career to uplifting others.
Hillary went on to earn a four-year degree from Moi University. During his studies, he actively engaged in community-driven initiatives:
- Youth Leadership: Served as President of the Youth Peer Providers, sharpening his leadership skills and mentoring peers.
- Community Facilitation: Facilitated Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) sessions and supported the Saturday Program.
- Professional Advocacy: Gained field experience as a Gender Officer and Mental Health Advocate with SHOFCO, alongside earning certifications in mental health and community advocacy.
Coming Full Circle: Returning as a Case Manager
After graduating, Hillary returned to the foundation as an intern to gain hands-on field experience. Today, he proudly serves as a full-time Case Manager in our Primary Department.
For Hillary, returning to the organization is more than just a job—it is a privilege and a passion. Ngong Road provided the safe space, mentorship, and resources he needed to grow into a confident leader. Now, he uses his lived experience to mentor the next generation.
“My goal is simple: to bring joy to children every single day. I want every young person I mentor to feel safe, valued, heard, and empowered to dream—just like someone once did for me.”
