Merine is currently a grade two pupil at school at St George’s primary day school. During our selection interview, she managed to score 573 out of 700 marks. When she joins the program she will continue studying at St. Georges Primary. Her favourite subjects are mathematics, english and kiswahili. Her hobbies are playing ball games with friends and watching television with her elder brother. Merine’s dream is to be a doctor when she grows old so as to treat sick people in the community. She is friendly and looks very organized. Her mother described her as a smart student who has the potential to do well in school. Merine wore a smile on her pretty face throughout our conversation with her mother. Merine and her brother Victor, (also looking for a sponsor) report to school by 7am every morning. They therefore wake up at 5am and leave the house quarter to 6am. They are lucky to be chauffeured to school by a neighbor who also has kids in the same school.
Merine and her brother live with their mother who is a single mother. The mother is a casual labourer who depends on casual jobs which are not promised. She says it has been hard to survive, especially since all they get is from hand to mouth. The family is needy and the mother complained of financial strains especially after the covid-19 period. She says life has been hard for the family given the fact that she is the only parent and the sole provider of the family. The father is late. The family lives in a double-room house, the house has some furniture, connected to electricity and there is water which normally supplied three days a week by the city council water company. They all (mother, Merine and Victor) share a bed. They also share one pit latrine with their neighbors (ten families) who live within the plot. The environment around their home is conducive for raising children, it’s quiet and peaceful. The mothers thought of getting her daughter sponsored is that her daughter will be attending school throughout without any interference due to fees arrears. The sponsorship will help Merine be the best version of herself and more importantly, be able to finish school and transform her life and that of her family for the better.
