Barnice is 16 years old, born on 19th of January 1999. She is in Form Three at St Tito Girls Secondary School. She lives in Waithaka slums with two aunts and brother. Her parents both passed away of HIV/AIDS. She has also tested positive and under ARV medication. She has been in the program for seven years and has benefited from the improved education, medical and nutritional support. Recently her sponsor has declined to continue her support so she is in need of a new sponsor for her final years in the program. Her brother Leonard Nyagidi is also in the program.
The family lives in a two roomed house made of bricks. The house has an electric connection that makes it comfortable for her to study at night. They buy water for domestic use from a nearby vendor. The toilets and bathrooms are outside the house and are shared with other tenants. She sleeps on a bed that she shares with her aunt. Her aunt works as a counselor which is her source of income. They use gas/kerosene stove for cooking their meals. She gets three meals in a day.
At school her best subjects are history and Kiswahili. Her school performance is average and she is working hard in her studies to better her grades. She is polite, humble and talks more when around people she is familiar with. During school breaks she helps her aunt with laundry, cleaning utensils and tidying the house duties. Her favorite food is rice and chapatti. Playing netball is one of the favorite things she enjoys doing most with her friends. She would like to study hotel management after she completes her secondary education.
Her aunt is grateful to the program for the continued education support. She hopes that she will get a sponsorship opportunity and also continue working hard in her studies as she wants the best for her future.
