Supportive Community

We strive to create a supportive community for our children through sponsorship of our Saturday Program, an annual Day Camp in August and by assigning each child to a counselor who keeps close tabs on the child's health, school performance and home situation.

Saturday Program

The Saturday Program is held at a private field with room for a play area.

  • Early each Saturday morning, our cooks arrive to prepare food for the children.  Our counselors come to teach and play with the children.

  • Through a combination of school lunches and the Saturday Program, Ngong Road Program children are assured at least one meal six days a week.

  • We take roll every week so that we can keep tabs on the children and make sure they are getting the attention they need.

August Camp

Each August we sponsor a camp for all the children in the program during their school holidays.  The camp includes

  • Games and fun activities from the U.S. and Kenya

  • Career presentations and counseling

  • A community-outreach program such as clearing a road

  • Breakfast and lunch daily

The Camp is staffed by our local counselors and and by volunteers from the U.S. who travel to Nairobi to attend.  More information is available under the "Tours, Visits and Camps" tab.

New Library

Through the generous donations of two sponsors and the efforts of a determined volunteer we now have a lending library in our office for the children.  Lending libraries are not common in Kenya.  In fact, we believe we may have the only lending library in Dagoretti and certainly the only one to which the children in our program have access.

The library is open on Saturday after the Saturday Program.  It is a lively place with children selecting books or just reading them at the tables and chairs provided.
