Progress

In Kenya the school year is the calendar year.  In the middle of our first year, 2006, we launched a pilot project with four children in June.  We immediately created a U.S. 501 (c)(3) organization to enable U.S. contributors to make tax-deductible contributions.  We formed a Board of Directors in the U.S. and named the new organization Friends of Ngong Road.  Concurrently, Peter Ngundu created a registered entity in Kenya called Ngong Road Children Association and recruited a Board of Directors there as well.

The program has grown quickly.  We sponsored 60 children for the school year beginning in January, 2007 and were able to double that with an additional 60 children sponsored for the May 2007 term.  This took us to 120 children in the Program for the 2007 school year.  By the end of the 2008 school year we had enrolled over 215 children and over 250 by the end of 2009. Our goal is to enroll over 400 children by the end of 2013.

Peter Ndungu is now our Executive Director on a full-time basis.  Five full-time and five part-time case workers have been hired.  We have also hired an office administrator who also is the librarian of our new library.

We opened a small Nairobi office in January, 2007 to provide a focal point for both parents and school officials.  In 2009 we  moved to a larger office that also houses the library.
