Education

Most Kenyans (86.4%) have completed primary school (finished grade 8). However, only 25% of the population has completed high school.

This is improving.  Looking just at primary school graduates from 1994 – 2006 the percentage of children continuing to high school has increased to 41%. Because education is considered to be such a privilege, a stunning 99.43% of those who begin high school finish it.

Our Program is designed to ensure that the children enrolled in the Program complete primary school successfully and enroll in secondary schools that are of good quality and deliver solid education. Over 95% of our students have been admitted to secondary school, far in advance of the country average.

All children in Kenya must wear a uniform to school (including standard shoes and socks).  Friends of Ngong Road provides these items as well as basic school supplies and core curricula books when children enter the program.

Despite the less-than-optimal conditions in many schools, it is clear that an education is the best path out of poverty for young people in Kenya.

In 2005, the government of Kenya mandated "universal" primary school education (K-8).  The mandate was not accompanied with enough resources to support universal access to education so there are significant challenges, especially for poor children.
